Often hunts rock hyraxes and will also kill and consume jackals, foxes, hares, mongooses, and small rodents of all kinds. It has even been known to prey on the smaller african wildcat where their ranges overlap. The caracal will often take small prey items up into a tree to consume at leisure in the safty of the branches.
This extremely agile cat is also good at leaping into the air so birds are often included in the diet. It catches them in dramatic fashion, by leaping completely off the ground and swiping at birds flying up from the ground. So accurate is the caracal's leaps that it has been known to bring down 2 birds from a flock with just one leap. It also climbs trees to pounce on birds roosting in low branches.
