Sometimes called the African Lynx because of the long tufts of hair on it's ears- present also in the Canadian and European Lynx. (Often thought that the tufts convey moods of the cat)
Occasionally classified with the lynx because of the ears, the Caracal is actually thought to be more closely related to the golden cat. A heavy species, the caracal roams the scrub, steppe, and woodlands of Africa and Asia.

Caracal is so called from a Turkish word 'Karakal' which means "black ears" and refers to the disinctive coloration on the backs of the ears.
